Structural Engineering Minor (20 hrs.)

Allen School of Engineering and Computing - Civil Engineering Department

Structural engineering is traditionally viewed as a branch of civil engineering dealing with the analysis and design of structures to support or resist loads. The curriculum is designed to provide students with (a) a foundation to pursue graduate studies or a career in structural engineering and (b) an understanding of the theory, behavior, and design of individual structural elements and structural systems. Please contact Reiners Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering if you are interested in this program.

Mission

The Structural Engineering Minor provides students with a strong foundation in the analysis, design, and behavior of structural systems. The program consists of 20 credit hours, covering essential topics in solid mechanics, structural analysis, and structural design. Students gain hands-on experience through laboratory courses and advanced coursework in specialized areas such as timber design, bridge engineering, and foundation engineering. This minor is ideal for students looking to enhance their understanding of structural engineering principles and prepare for careers or further academic study in civil or structural engineering.

Outcomes

Upon completing the Structural Engineering Minor, students will be able to:

1. Analyze structural behavior by applying concepts of stress, strain, and deformation in engineering materials.

2. Determine structural loads by utilizing ASCE 7 standards to classify structures and compute load effects, tributary loads, and load paths.

3. Design structural components by applying engineering principles to reinforced concrete and steel structures under various loading conditions.

4. Apply computational methods by using classical and matrix-based computer techniques to analyze determinate and indeterminate structures.
