AHS 233 Phonics for Speech Language Pathology

This course introduces students to phonics and the phonological foundations of spoken and written language with direct application to Speech Language Pathology. Students will examine the interrelationship between phonological awareness, phonics, speech sound production, and early literacy skills. Coursework integrates theoretical knowledge with applied analysis relevant to the assessment and intervention of speech sound disorders, language disorders, and literacy-based difficulties across the lifespan. This course supports ASHA standards related to normal and disordered speech and language development, phonological and linguistic foundations, and evidence-based clinical practice, and serves as foundational preparation for advanced coursework in articulation, phonological disorders, language development, and clinical methods.
